For a generation of schoolboys it was the toy to have. But in an age of computer games, slot car racing seems to have some of its allure for the young.
Now, a slot car racing club in Norwich – with an average age of around 55 – has launched an appeal for more young people to take up the hobby.
Norwich Slot Car Racing meets each Monday at its headquarters on Hurricane Way, near Norwich airport, where it has a 120ft circuit.
Ken Mason, 62, from the group, said: 'It's such a shame that there aren't more youngsters involved with slot car racing. There seems to be such a prevalence of people spending all day staring at television screens playing computer games and barely seeing daylight.'
The club is made up of a generation of people that grew up with the toy, before life got in the way. Now, they have been able to rediscover their lost hobby.

Mr Mason said: 'It feels to me as though hobby culture is coming to an end. However, this is a great thing to do – whatever age you are.
'Age isn't a factor; somebody in their sixties can be just as fast as somebody in their teens and vice versa. It can be a great family activity and is very hands-on.

'There's a serious competitive element too; although we do have a laugh too.'
